Buying recorded music
Article Abstract:
About 70 record shops were surveyed, with WH Smith, Our Price, HMV and Virgin considered to offer the best service for good music knowledge and staff helpfulness. Specialist stores, WH Smith, Virgin and HMV offer the best service for classical music purchases. WH Smith was the only department store to offer an equivalent service to the leading record shops. Larger stores offer the widest range of music. Prices for pop music vary, with different shops within the same chains also showing price discrepancies. CDs imported from the USA can cost half the price in the UK. Money can also be saved by subscribing to music clubs, but choice is limited.

Plugging in safely
Article Abstract:
Only two of 24 UK electrical retailers wired plugs correctly. Elsewhere in Europe appliances must be supplied with fitted plugs. Moulded-on plugs are the safest. All plugs should have a BSI Kitemark or the ASTA Diamond mark on them. Shops should train staff in fitting plugs; untrained staff should not fit plugs. Broken plugs should be replaced, loose wires should be rewired and the correct fuse should be fitted.

Cheaper CDs
Article Abstract:
British consumers are still paying too much for compact discs (CD) featuring music. Some CDs can cost up to 15 pounds sterling. Consumers can save about 2 pounds sterling by ordering a CD from a US mail-order company by telephone. CDs from UK mail-order companies are also cheaper than shops, but prices vary.
