The introduction of digital television in Oct 1998 broadened the choice of television channels in the UK to over 130. The channels available to an individual viewer depends upon their receiver. Viewers with Sky digital satellite receivers, for example, have access to 50 pay channels, pay-per-view options, the free services and a number of audio channels. Viewers who opt for digital terrestrial or cable television will have a slightly different range of options. Interactive television services, including home shopping and banking services, will become available during 1999

Digital television services will be available in the United Kingdom by the end of 1998. Digital television broadcasters SDN and ONdigital will just offer services via digital terrestrial television while broadcasters such as British Broadcasting Corporation Ltd and Channel 5 will offer bother digital and analogue service transmissions. Electronic programme guides will be available for viewing reference.
