Deals on wheels
Article Abstract:
Buying a new car is complicated by the deals and discounts offered by dealers. An average discount of 8.8% was given to 'Which?' readers who bought a new car in the 12 months to October 1992. The average discount given to part-exchange buyers was 7%. Ford, Rover and Vauxhall are now offering contract hire purchase schemes, allowing the public to buy a new car every two years. However, these schemes mean the buyer does not own the car until the end of the period, and they have other drawbacks related to the value of the car. Car makers have great control over car sales and price, and usually use franchised dealers, which can only sell one make, which makes comparing cars difficult for buyers. The costs of various car loans and advice on getting a good deal for a new deal are also presented.
