Five non-turbo diesel cars vary in price, comfort, drivability and features. The 11,195 pounds sterling Rover 218 SD is expensive but easy to drive, and offers good secondary safety. The Peugot 309 GRD at 9,995 pounds sterling is rewarding to drive but has mediocre secondary safety. The Fiat Tipo 1.7 at 9,635 pounds sterling has poor visibility and is not recommended, while the Renault 19 GTD at 10,010 pounds sterling suffered from brake fade.

Reliable impression

A survey of almost 34,000 car owners in the UK has produced information about the reliability of cars up to two years old, three to five years old and six to eight years old. In the first category, the most reliable models were Daihatsu and Lexus, while in the second category the most reliable models were Honda, Daihatsu, Proton and Toyota. In the third category, the most reliable models were Mazda, Honda and Proton.
