Facts on food labels
Article Abstract:
Food labels in the UK are not permitted to be misleading, but this does not mean that they are always helpful to consumers. It is important to look carefully at the name of a product, which must indicate if it has undergone any type of processing, for example, and to look at the date mark. Many food labels now give nutrition information, but legally this is only required if the manufacturer makes a nutrition claim or benefit. Some ingredients come in many different forms, and not all ingredients have to be listed.

Where's the beef?
Article Abstract:
Many everyday food products contain beef or beef derivatives, but it can be hard for consumers to tell which are the products concerned, as food labelling is not sufficiently informative. This is a particular concern at a time when there is extensive publicity about BSE. Under current food labelling legislation, manufacturers are not obliged to state which types of meat are used. They also do not have to state whether their products contain mechanically-recovered meat.
