The sounds of grief
Article Abstract:
John Corigliano has written his First Symphony as an elegy to his many friends who have died of Aids. He specifically wanted to display rage and the sense of loss rather than the concept of Aids itself. He uses precise dramatic effects as part of his technique, part of the first movement being played by a piano offstage to symbolise death. He argues with the opinion that music is just music without any underlying meaning as Stravinsky and others said.
