Food frights: planning a big day out? It's not just the rides that could turn your stomach
Article Abstract:
There were about 95,000 reported food poisoning cases in the UK in 1996. The food safety of 13 of the top tourist attractions in the UK was checked, testing food on offer, and standards of hygiene at restaurants, kiosks and cafes. Generally the standards were poor, with one third of the 65 food samples failing to meet satisfactory microbiological guidelines, particularly sandwiches. Out of 36 outlets, only five met good practice criteria based on environmental health standards, and only one satisfactorily passed the microbiological tests and hygiene inspection. An explanation of the different strains of food poisoning bacteria is provided.
