One-stop flop
Article Abstract:
The products offered by Britain's largest banks and building societies are often costly and could be expensive mistakes if customers buy all their services from a single provider. A comparison of the products likely to be offered by banks, including savings, borrowings and insurance, shows that they are not competitively priced and most offer poor value. Overall, Barclays Bank's products are shown to be consistently mediocre, while Nationwide Building Society generally offers better value for savings and borrowing products.

New-style banks: You can start a savings account when you buy your groceries, and pay a bill when you ring up for insurance. But are new-style banks a good deal?
Article Abstract:
Many of the new style banks in supermarkets and insurance companies were initially introduced to lure customers. Some only provide average rates now, similar to most high street building societies, although several have best buy instant access accounts, such as Safeway's Direct Saving account paying 7.3%. New entrants to mortgages include Direct Line and Sainsbury's, both of which are best buys, and several new style bank mortgages are more flexible than traditional lenders.

Postal banking loophole alarm
Article Abstract:
A NatWest bank customer lost 7,500 pounds sterling after her cheque went missing in the post. The bank had failed to let the customer know that the account number into which the cheque was to be paid, should have been included next to her own name as a security measure. The fraudster who intercepted the cheque, used fake identification to open an account at the Woolwich building society.
