Operating systems and environements
Article Abstract:
Portable computer operating systems are dominated by Microsoft's Windows operating environment. The Windows graphic user interface is developed from Microsoft's original MS-DOS operating system, which became popular after IBM adopted it for its first industry-standard PCs. Using Windows on portable computers is problematical, with some screens being unable to use it to full effect. However, manufacturers are concentrating on improving their LCD displays to accommodate Windows. Apple portable computers have their own icon-based operating system but a range of options are provided for those wishing to use other operating systems.

Screens
Article Abstract:
All portable computers are equipped with flat screens, with most using LCD technology. Liquid crystal displays, such as those found on calculators, use twisted nematic methods to produce an image. The LCD market is led by Sharp, with a 45% share of the world market. Portable computers are available with colour screens, but mono screens are enough for simple applications. An overview of the types of portable computer screens available is presented, including definitions of active matrix technology and passive matrix technology. Points to consider when choosing a screen are discussed.

Portable features
Article Abstract:
The most important part of a portable computer is the processor chip which sets the speed at which applications run. Most notebook computers use Intel processors, which dominate the market, although the market is also influenced by Motorola. There are several types of processor available, with the most advanced being Intel's Pentium, or 80586, chip. It is widely used in desktop machines and should eventually be available in many portable machines. The choice of processor largely depends on the applications that are to be run, with basic packages generally needing less power.
