Patient waiting
Article Abstract:
The UK intends to launch a new system for ambulances in October 1997, whereby emergency calls will be prioritised. Under the present Patients' Charter, ambulances have to respond to 50% of calls within 8 minutes, whatever the level of emergency, but under the new system ambulances will be required to respond to 75% of cases which are imminently life-threatening within that period. Such cases represent only 25% of calls, so the new target is not as as high as the current one.
