The future of paging
Article Abstract:
The UK's paging market continues to grow, despite the popularity of mobile phones. The UK Paging Industry Association expects 2.5 million people to be using pagers by 2000. The advent of new technology is advantageous to pagers, giving them greater flexibility, with new services and applications expected in the future. While two-way paging is available in the US, UK operators say the system requires too much investment to make it marketable at present.

Article Abstract:
The introduction of the concept of Calling Party Pays (CPP), under which operators of pager services sell the pager unit and then charge premium rates to those sending a message, looks set to revive the pager market in the UK. Sales could also be boosted by new equipment which offers a wide range of facilities, such as receiving e-mail when on the move. Pager network operators include BT, Hutchison, London Pager, Mercury and Vodapage.
