Turning data into information
Article Abstract:
Vendors of accountancy software packages have focused on making their systems more user-friendly and more open to other desktop applications. The growing importance of data analysis has made the use of graphical user interfaces more popular and most major vendors offer an interface to front-ends such as Macintosh and Windows. Integrating systems with those used by other companies can be achieved through electronic data interchange, but although the procedure is simple, the complexity of some systems makes it difficult to standardise formats. The move towards truly open systems is continuing.

EDI and e-commerce
Article Abstract:
Electronic data interchange (EDI) is increasingly popular as a means of business-to-business commerce and allows businesses to streamline their processes. New products are being designed which allow smaller businesses to take advantage of EDI, including Albany Software's linkRange product, designed to integrate with both Pegasus Capital Gold and Sage Line 50. Meanwhile, Microsoft's Value Chain Initiative, which has been joined by several major accounting software firms, allows companies with different accounting systems to talk to one another via the Internet.
