Many Nicam VCRs are available at about 250 pounds sterling or less and S-VHS models start at 350 pounds sterling. The JCV HR-S7500 S-VHS machine is 350 pounds sterling and was found to have a very sharp picture. All the tested VCRs had auto-tuning and included programming systems. The best buy basic VHS machines were the Panasonic NVHD630 at 250 pounds sterling and the Sanyo VHR778 at 190 pounds sterling. The best buy S-VHS machine was the JVC HR-S7500 at 350 pounds sterling.

There are a very few manufacturers of the video recorders and the best way to identify the best is to look for clarity and sound. The models that are doing the rounds in the market are Panasonic, Sharp, JVC and Sony.

VCRs and personal video recorders are the best choices for recording television, as recordable DVD machines are still too expensive. Panasonic and Sharp VCRs were rated best, and the Sky+ and TiVo PVRs tested well.
