The UK has tax rules relating to marital status. Married couples may claim the married couples' allowance in addition to the personal allowance. They may allocate this between themselves as they wish. Cohabiting couples receive no extra allowance, but single parents may claim an extra personal allowance. A widow may claim a bereavement allowance in the tax year of her husband's death and in the following tax year. Widowers may claim the married couple's allowance during the tax year of his wife's death.
