Altruist cheater dynamics in Dictyostelium: aggregated distribution gives stable oscillations

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted on the unicellular organism Dictyostelium discoideum to study its altruistic behavior. The model consists of the simulation of a spatial two-dimensional stochastic life cycle beginning from spores, growth, dispersal of the amoebas, the development of aggregates and eventually, the fruiting bodies with spores. At the beginning of new life cycle, cheaters or parasitic cells which do not contribute to stalk formation can drive the altruistic population to extinction. Findings show that the cheater and altruist can survive together given a stable oscillating population.

The genetic evolution of flexible strategies

Article Abstract:

The statements made by Mary Jane West-Eberhard are refuted. West-Eberhard has classified the students of insect eusociality evolution into geneticists and naturalists. She also stated that naturalists integrate the environmental factors in the development of altruistic behavior while geneticists do not. The statement by West-Eberhard on epigenetic evolution is also contradicted.

Genetics, epigenetics, and flexibility: a reply to Crozier

Article Abstract:

The critique by R.H. Crozier on the works of Mary Jane West-Eberhard is contradicted. Students of insect eusociality can be classified either as geneticists or a naturalists depending on their mode of research. The alleles for altruistic behavior do not always find expression in the genetic models for altruism.
