Basement reactivation in a sub-Andean foreland flexural bulge: The Pantanal wetland, SW Brazil
Article Abstract:
Elastic plate rheology for the continental lithosphere may explain geological and geophysical observations in fold/thrust-foreland basins systems where flexural bulges are intrinsic. The role of forebulges in causing uplift, flexural extension and basement reactivation has been assessed. The results of two-dimensional flexural modeling of deformation and bending stresses have been integrated with geological, geophysical and drill hole data of the Pantanal wetland in southwestern Brazil. The role of the forebulge is not limited solely to the formation of erosional unconformities.

A flexural isostatic model of lithosphere shortening and foreland basin formation: application to the Eastern Cordillera and Subandean belt of NW Argentina
Article Abstract:
A model of lithosphere shortening that combines flexural isostatic and structural balancing permits the quantitative reconciliation of lithosphere shortening, thrust sheet emplacement, and foreland basin formation. A change in flexural rigidity explains the change in the wavelength of sedimentary deposition over time in the Subandean belt, NW Argentina. Shortening estimates of 110 km generate the foreland stratigraphy, topography and Bouguer anomaly of the Eastern Cordillera and Subandean belt.

Crustal shortening and Eocene extension in the southeastern Canadian Cordillera: some thermal and rheological considerations
Article Abstract:
Metamorphic core complexes were formed in the southeastern Canadian Cordillera during Eocene crustal extension. The study of the relation between crustal shortening and extension show that crustal shortening may have lead to Eocene extension in the region. The Cordillera inroofing at the rate of 1-2 mm/yr accounts for the cooling history of the Valhalla core complex.
