Evolution of the Southern San Joaquin basin and mid-tertiary "transitional" tectonics, Central California
Article Abstract:
A history of tectonic activity and sedimentation in the Southern San Joaquin Basin (SSJB) during the Cenozoic was developed from comprehensive analysis of paleomagnetic, seismic, biostratigraphic, field, and borehole data. Deformation of the Southern California region along the North American plate margin occured in five Oligocene-Miocene phases involving alternating periods of subsidence and upliftment. In mid-Tertiary, the San Joaquin/Tehachapi extensional terrane was located between the Western Mojave and Western California terranes. Other findings indicate a lower age for the San Andreas fault.
