Styles of footwall uplift along the Simplon and Brenner normal fault systems, central and Eastern Alps

Research examining the different geological footwall uplift styles found on the systems of Brenner and Simplon in the Eastern and Central Alps is presented. Particular attention is given to data illustrating the geological structure of the region.

Fluid inclusion constraints on the kinematics of footwall uplift beneath the Brenner Line normal fault, eastern Alps
Article Abstract:
Research an the uplift under the Brenner Line normal fault in the Alps uses data from oriented planes of fluid inclusions and couples them with field data on fractures and microfaults to determine depth-temperature-time constraints on the incremental strain history. The results indicate that the west down structures formed at depths of 10-20 km and temperatures greater than 450 deg C in the Oligocene. Lesser temperatures and structure depth were demonstrated in the east down. These figures indicate that a rolling hinge was present in the Brenner Line footwall and that subvertical simple shear was the primary force causing isostatically driven footwall deformation.

Structural expression of a rolling hinge in the footwall of the Brenner Line normal fault, eastern Alps
Article Abstract:
Observations of the kinematic and temporal sequence of structures along the Brenner Line low-angle normal fault in the eastern Alps indicate that the footwall may pass through two rolling hinges. The rolling hinge converts the net slip across a normal fault, and not only its horizontal component, into a horizontal extension. The magnitude of crustal extension across normal faults whose footwalls pass through a rolling hinge, is higher than for those that do not develop along with a hinge. The hinges at the Brenner Line are likely to be at the bottom and top of a ramp.
