Frank Pasquill: 1914-1994
Article Abstract:
English meteorologist Frank Pasquill passed away on Oct. 15, 1994. Born in Trindon, England on Sept. 8, 1994, Pasquill started his research on the electrification of raindrops and snowflakes in 1935 in Durham University, where he was a Ph.D. student. He began his career in meteorology at the U.K. Meteorological Office in 1937. However, it was during his term as director of the Meteorological Unit of the School of Agriculture at Cambridge when he made detailed wind, temperature and humidity profiles close to the ground surface and measured soil evaporation using a direct weighing technique.

Philip D. Thompson 1922-1994
Article Abstract:
Former National Center for Atmospheric Research Associate Director Philip D. Thompson died on Sep. 3, 1994. Thompson was born on Apr. 6, 1922 in Rossville, IN and grew up in Champaign-Urbana, IL. He completed an S.B. degree in physical science in the University of Chicago. He first became interested in meteorology after attending lecture by Carl-Gustaf Rossby in 1942. Thompson was appointed chief of the Atmospheric Analysis Laboratory from 1948 to 1954. He joined the National Center for Atmospheric Research after retiring from the Air Force in 1962.
