Growth and grazing on Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus by two marine ciliates
Article Abstract:
Ciliate predation rates may be lower for Prochlorococcus than for Synechococcus, which could account for the different geographic distribution of the two groups in marine environments. Synechococcus is found only in the upper 100m, whereas Prochlorococcus extends to greater depths in oligotrophic waters. Consumption of the two picophytoplankton groups was compared for Strombidium sulcatum, an algivorous ciliate, and Uronema sp., a bactivorous ciliate. Predation rates by both ciliate species were higher for Synechococcus than for Prochlorococcus.

Diel periodicity of Synechococcus populations and grazing by heterotrophic nanoflagellates: analysis of food vacuole contents
Article Abstract:
Diel periodicity of Synechococcus populations and grazing by heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HFLAGs) in the bay of Villefranche of the NW Mediterranean are discussed based on analysis of food vacuole contents. Data show that a relationship may exist between vulnerability to predation and average Synechococcus cell size.

Ingestion and digestion of an autotrophic picoplankter, Synechococcus, by a heterotrophic nanoflagellate, Bodo saltans
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted of ingestion and digestion of Synechococcus, an autotrophic picoplankter, by Bodo saltans, a planktonic freshwater bacterivore. Topics discussed include the effect of fluorescent microspheres, rates of digestion, and estimation of ingestion based on food vacuole content.
