Path modeling methods and ecological interactions: a response to Grace and Pugesek
Article Abstract:
Path modeling methods still cannot replicate the efficacy of well-designed long-term experiments in the study of the structure and dynamics of complex ecological systems. Long-term experiments are required to detect certain kinds of indirect interactions, such as those with long time lags. Statistical approaches such as structural equation modeling cannot extract information that is not available in the underlying data.

On desert rodents, favored states, and unresolved issues: scaling up and down regional assemblages and local communities
Article Abstract:
The functional group-randomization test is evaluated for effectiveness in predicting matrices proportions in desert rodent populations, with and without biological competition. It is posited that interfunctional group competition complicates community assembly analyses.

Assembly rules: desert rodent communities are structured at scales from local to continental
Article Abstract:
The effects of competition are studied in 11 granivorous desert rodent populations using Monte Carlo simulation techniques. Topics include exotics colonization, geographic range contraction, and extinction.
