Present-day motion of the Sierra Nevada block and some tectonic implications for the Basin and Range province, North American Cordillera
Article Abstract:
New Global Positioning System (GPS) data from sites on the stable interior and margins of the Sierra Nevada block have become available. This makes it possible to test the rigid block hypothesis and to improve understanding of Sierra Nevada motion and related crustal deformation. Velocity data from the five GPS sites on the stable interior of the Sierra Nevada block are extremely well fit by one Euler vector, to substantially better than one standard error. It was established that the block is rigid within velocity uncertainties. The Euler vector predicts northwest motion of the block in relation to stable North America at faster rates than earlier estimates.

Tectonic evolution of the Paleoproterozoic Torngat Orogen: evidence from pressure-temperature-time-deformation paths in the North River map area, Labrador
Article Abstract:
Pressure-temperature-time-deformation paths for rocks from the granulite-facies core and amphibolite-facies Foreland zone of the Paleoproterozoic Torngat Orogen in northeastern Canada have been developed. The data are used to develop the first fully-integrated evolutionary model for the oregen. The model shows that the orogen evolved through three temporally and kinematically distinct events over approximately 80 million years.

Chronology of deformation within the turbidite-dominated, Lachlan orogen: Implications for the tectonic evolution of eastern Australia and Gondwana
Article Abstract:
Ar-Ar data from major fault zones in the Lachlan orogen is presented, defining the deformation, metamorphism and unroofing chronology in the orogen belt. The structures and kinematics of the fault zones are also discussed. Study of the Lachlan orogen provides insights into the actions of large scale accretions of thick oceanic sedimentary/volcanic prisms.
