Article Abstract:
Kerr and Thompsonstated that the high partition coefficent for Y between garnet and basaltic meltwill reduce the amount of Y in the liquid. This is assuming that garnet ispresent. However, this can only be true if garnet comprises 35% of the fractionate. The data gathered from the experiments show that garnet make up only 10% of thebasalt rocks at 15-20 kbars. The composition of the Mull mugearites has no bearingon the interpreation of the fractionation of basalt rocks in the FaeroeIslands.

High-pressure fractionation in rift-related basaltic magmatism:Faeroe plateau basalts
Article Abstract:
StefanBernstein stated that the fractional crystallization of garnet is an explanation forthe positive relation between the Zr/Y ratios and the fractional crystallizationof basalt rocks in the Faeroe Islands. However, his hypothesis is questionable, since Y is highly compatible in garnet and a decrease in garnet in thefractionating rocks will reduce the volume of Y in the residual liquid. If the percentweight of MgO is plotted against Y, both quantities decrease in the absence ofgarnet.

Crustal assimilation during turbulent magma ascent (ATA); new isotopic evidence from the Mull Tertiary lava succession, N.W. Scotland
Article Abstract:
A geochemical analysis of Tertiary Mull lava shows that crustal contamination in magmas occurred by assimilation of acidic partial melts of Lewisian lower crust in hottest magmas, during turbulent ascent. The rise of melts occurred through thin, poorly connected dyke- and sill-like magma chambers. The analytical methods used in the study, geochemical results and analysis of the results are given.
