The paleozoic tectonic evolution of the northern edge of North America: a structural study of northern Ellesmere Island, Canadian Arctic Archipelago
Article Abstract:
The Clements Markham fold belt on Ellesmere Island was studied using its structural and stratigraphic conformity with Spitsbertgen and the relationship of the island to Pearya during the latter half of Silurian as bases. Results indicate that the boundary faults of the present terrane resulted from the disjunction of a strike-slip component from the compressive component during plate motion. The deformation occurring in the Silurian period is interpreted as the commencement of the mountain building cycle that reached its peak during the Late Devonian or early Carboniferous periods.

Late paleozoic orogenies in western Africa and eastern North America: the diachronous closure of Thiec Ocean
Article Abstract:
Sedimentary basin subsidence and deformation, autochthonous structural development, and low to medium-grade metamorphism characterized western Morocco, southeastern Canada, and New England during the Carboniferous period. However, continental collision in the southern Appalachians and some parts of New England involved deep-seated thrusts with high-grade metamorphism during the same period. The diachronous closure of the Theic ocean is proposed as the cause for this pattern of deformation.
