The role of the grain boundary at chemical and isotopic fronts in marble during contact metamorphism
Article Abstract:
The microscale behavior of carbon and oxygen isotopes around a reaction front in contact metamorphic aureole in the metamorphic terrain of Hida, Japan, was examined. The study focused on how grain boundaries act as fluid flow pathways in marbles in contact metamorphism. Findings revealed no particular role for the grain boundary in the diffusion of carbonic species in the metamorphic fluid in transportation. Lattice diffusion of oxygen isotopes was approximately six times more rapid that lattice diffusion of carbon isotopes. Oxygen grain-boundary diffusion was quicker than oxygen lattice diffusion. Oxygen diffusion took place in an aqueous fluid phase.
