United Arab Emirates' capitalization market remains one of the largest in the Middle East region despite the inexistence of an official stock market. The country achieved a capitalization market of more than $19 billion during the end of 1997's first half with its banking industry accounting for almost 51% of the market. Stock turnover, however, remained low with 1996 traded share value amounting only to as much as 2% of capitalization market.

Construction/renovation boom boosts demand for equipment

United Arab Emirates' construction and renovation boom continues to create a rising demand for heavy construction equipment. The importation of heavy construction equipment is projected to grow by 18% or $174 million in 1997 compared to 1996's record. The demand is expected to reach an annual average real rate of 20% for the next three years in anticipation of a continued construction and renovation boom for the next three to five years.

Middle East stock markets enjoyed robust performance in fiscal year 1997, despite the economic threats of the Asian currency crisis. Among the major players in the market, Muscat Securities Market gained the highest, with 141% stock increase and 480.58 index points. Kuwait's stocks likewise achieved record setting levels, with 39% overall market growth, followed by Saudi Arabia with 27.9% increase.
