A North American Free Trade Agreement and East Asian Developing Countries
Article Abstract:
The implications of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on the economies of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand are discussed. Among the provisions which will most likely affect the East Asian countries are those related to tariff changes, rules of origin, safeguards and rules for NAFTA investors. In particular, East Asian trade will be affected through trade diversion and increased North American import demand. East Asian countries will also face increased competition in investments.

The sustainability of East Asian growth
Article Abstract:
It is possible to question the widely-held view that very high levels of economic growth among East Asian Newly Industrialized Economies will continue into the 21st century. Recent research indicates that total factor productivity growth has not been the main driving force behind East Asia's economic performance. It will be necessary to increase cultivation of human resources and for governments to play an active role in social and economic infrastructure investment if economic dynamism is to be sustained.

China's economic reform and open-door policy viewed from Southeast Asia
Article Abstract:
Countries belonging to the Assn. of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) react differently to the rapid growth of China's economy and its emergence as a regional power. Smaller ASEAN countries, specifically, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand, consider this development as beneficial to their respective economic aspirations. Indonesia, however, being a large nation, still views China's growth with suspicion and apprehension.
