A note on Hollander's 'Notes on a possible Bentham manuscript: a mystery unresolved.'
Article Abstract:
There are doubts as to whether a manuscript written in the handwriting of James Mill are the work of Mill himself, or the work of Jeremy Bentham. The document was written prior to 1815 and was discovered by Samuel Hollander. It deals with the impact on profits of the cultivation of land of different qualities. It appears unlikely that Bentham wrote this manuscript since, in his writings, he pays little attention to issues of land scarcity and the idea of diminishing returns as applied to agriculture.

Notes on a possible Bentham manuscript: a mystery unresolved
Article Abstract:
Piero Sraffa mentioned a paper that could have been written by Jeremy Bentham in a work which Sraffa wrote on David Ricardo. The paper dealt with profits accrued from the cultivation of land. The document appears to have been written out by James Mill at a time when Mill was a collaborator of Bentham from 1808 to 1814. The material may have been prepared prior to this date by Bentham. There are stil doubts as to who wrote the document originally, though the handwriting is that of James Mill.

Sigot on the mystery manuscript: a reply
Article Abstract:
There is a debate on whether a document on the impact of cultivating different qualities of land can be attributed to James Mill or Jeremy Bentham. Nathalie Sigot argues that Bentham is unlikely to have written the manuscript, but there are doubts as to whether he can be eliminated since the evidence against his authorship of the document is not strong enough. There are also passages in Bentham's works which indicate that he shared the concerns expressed in the manuscript.
