Efficiency and ownership in Slovene dairying: a comparison of econometric and programming techniques
Article Abstract:
Productive growth and efficiency of dairy farms and cooperatives in Slovenia is significantly affected by farm size rather their form of ownership. Data from four cooperatives and twelve private dairy farms from 1974 to 1990, which are analyzed using econometric and programming approaches, indicate that while productive growth among more technically efficient private farms is higher, cooperatives have higher productive efficiency because they can employ economies of scale. It is suggested that enlarging private farms could make them more viable and efficient.
