AFTA and intra-industry trade
Article Abstract:
The dominance of intermediate goods in intra-industry trade will reduce protectionism within the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA). Intra-industry trade is likely to further increase with the formation of AFTA and the activities of multinational corporations. However, inter-industry trade will be more favorable for trade adjustment within AFTA. Intra-industry trade accounted for over 50% of the total manufacturing trade of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during the 1986-1990 period. Singapore contributes the most in intra-industry trade, followed by Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

The need for common investment measures within ASEAN
Article Abstract:
The evaluation of investment environments in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) reveals that an agreement on investment measures among member countries will be advantageous at both the national and regional levels. Multinational corporations carry out the trade among the ASEAN nations. The member countries individually offer highly competitive investment incentives. These aspects affect intra regional cooperation in the field of direct foreign investment (DFI). Thus, a new policy to govern DFI in the region must emerge to promote intra regional economic cooperation.
