Address by His Excellency President Soeharto of the Republic of Indonesia at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development: Rio de Janeiro, 12 June 1992
Article Abstract:
Man has ruthlessly and thoughtlessly exploited his environment since the Industrial Revolution. No steps were taken to abate this damage until the 1970s. The crises in pollution and global warming through ozone-layer depletion must assume top priority. Those mainly influenced by environmental degradation are the poor who, in turn, degrade the environment. It is a moral obligation and in all of mankind's interest to ameliorate the conditions that result in poverty. Technological innovations along with increased knowledge of nature may be of help in attaining sustainable development.

Statement by His Excellency Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad of Malaysia at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development
Article Abstract:
Malaysia in 1992 can cope with its own environmental pollution since it has a small population to land-area ratio and most of this land is covered with self-regenerating rain forest. Most of the world's waste is created by the wealthy developed countries. Twenty-five percent of the world's population consumes 85% of its wealth and produces 90% of its waste. It is unfair for poor nations to be burdened with the waste of the rich. However, many topics concerning the environment are of international importance such as global warming and clear-cutting.
