Alternative historical trends in poverty
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the history of different poverty measures in the US reveals that the effective measure of a family's resources is an important factor in determining the poverty level in the US. The study also shows that incremental corrections in current models fails to account for medical expenses and that important factors to be accounted for in measuring poverty include taxes paid, value of home-ownership and the medical expenses incurred by the family.

Poverty-measurement research using the consumer expenditure survey and the survey of income and program participation
Article Abstract:
An analysis of poverty measurement techniques using consumer expenditure and income surveys as proposed by the National Academy of Sciences panel on poverty reveals that the new measure more adequately reflects US demographic conditions. The new techniques effectively account for tax and transfer policies, child support paid and work related expenditures which are not usually considered in measuring US poverty rates.

Absolute versus relative poverty
Article Abstract:
An analysis of relative and absolute poverty measure efficacy reveals that a hybrid approach combining the two techniques would better account for the current US population. The study finds that there are factors that should be considered and these include scale, deprivation, population characteristics, equivalence scale and threshold that the absolute or relative poverty measures used alone cannot account for.
