Balancing the economics curriculum: content, method, and pedagogy
Article Abstract:
Multiculturalism is leading to a reevaluation of the economic curriculum. New methods of economic education must recognize the importance of race and gender in most economic issues. Economics professors should decrease the emphasis on only mathematical modeling or rational behavior. Instructors should expand existing models and formulate new ones so that students can ask more inclusive questions. An economics laboratory may be more effective than a lecture format in providing a more favorable learning environment for students.

Attracting "otherwise bright students" to Economics 101
Article Abstract:
Data from the National Center for Educational Statistics showed a decline in the number of students majoring in economics. This decline is evident between 1990-1991 and 1992-1993, when a 14.2% decline was noted, 25% of which was accounted for by women. The content and climate of teaching economics has to be changed to prevent a further decline. Improvements in content and methodology, application of theory to actual situations and evaluation methods are expected to attract students into the economics course.
