Bank failures and contagion effects: evidence from Britain and Canada
Article Abstract:
The contagion effects of bank failures in the UK and Canada are studied. Results show that Canadian banks experienced negative cumulative abnormal returns while British banks experienced no negative effects in the event of bank failures. It is argued that the banking industry is more likely to exhibit negative reactions when increased regulations are proposed following bank failures. Formal deposit insurance schemes also failed to prevent contagion effects.
