The UK market for cake bars and cereal bars amounted to 134 million pounds sterling in 1999, up from 54 million pounds sterling in 1994. Cereal bars are estimated to account for 52% of sales, with cake bars accounting for 48%. Growth in the market hinges on the children's booming lunch box sector. Most lunch boxes contain a sweet product which tends to be cake bars or biscuits. The market is set to reach 286 million pounds sterling by 2004, at current prices.

The UK cake market totalled 1.3 billion pounds sterling in 1997, with no real growth achieved since 1993. Some 75% of the market is accounted for by wrapped cakes, with individual wrapped cakes being a dynamic sector. Cake sales are being revived with the development of the dessert cake, which compete in both the cake and dessert markets. Brand names account for more than 50% of the market's total value. The cake market is expected to slow in the short-term, although sales in the wrapped sector are set to rise by 4% by 2002.

The UK breakfast cereals market was worth an estimated 998 million pounds sterling in 1999, representing 378,000 t, with both value and volume down some 2% since 1997. The mature market is unlikely to show much growth in the short term, with value growth possibly being added through new product development. Ready-to-eat cereals account for around 99% of volume sales and 95% of value sales. The market is dominated by Kellogg, Cereal Partners, Quaker and Weetabix, together accounting for some 70% of volume sales. The breakfast cereals market is expected to amount to 979 million pounds sterling in 2000, at current prices, rising to 1.00 billion pounds sterling by 2003.
