Causes of intercity variation in homelessness
Article Abstract:
There were approximately 250,000 to 350,000 homeless people in the US in 1984, but the rates of homelessness, 'crowded' housing and 'doubled-up' housing varied among cities. Rates of homelessness ranged from 6.8 homeless individuals per 100,000 population in Fall River, MA, to 535.1 people per 100,000 population in San Francisco, CA. Research indicated that homelessness was a function of several factors, including the labor markets, housing markets and public policies toward low-income individuals and mentally ill individuals.
