Changing the hospital and related services component of the consumer price index
Article Abstract:
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will introduce improvements in the way it calculates the hospital and related services component of the Consumer Price Index starting with the Jan 1997 release of data. There will be a reclassification of the hospital and related services component into two main groups. The hospital services component will feature the subgroups inpatient and outpatient services. There will also be a nursing home services component. Specific items chosen for pricing within individual hospitals will be fdefined more broadly.

Consumer inflation in 1997 at 11-year low
Article Abstract:
The 1997 increase of 1.7% in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) All Items, U.S. city average, represents the lowest annual inflation rate since 1986. The core CPI-U, with food and energy prices excluded, had the smallest rise in 32 years, at 2.2%. Lower prices in consumer energy and a lower inflation rate for food prices were factors contributing to the low inflation rate. Both unemployment and inflation were at record lows in 1997, an unusual situation.

Experimental Consumer Price Index for Americans 62 years of age and older, 1993-1997
Article Abstract:
An experimental price index (CPI-E) has been calculated for Americans 62 years of age or above for Dec 1992-Dec 1997. The CPI-E increased 14.6% over this five-year period, compared to an increase of 13.7% for the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) and 13.2% for the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Conclusions should be drawn cautiously because of inherent methodological limitations of the CPI-E.
