Competition policy, developing countries and the WTO
Article Abstract:
The contentious issues related to the World Trade Organization's (WTO) competition policy is examined from a standpoint of a developing country. The main entities involved in the controversy are the WTO, the EU, US, Japan and the newly industrialized Asian nations. Competition law has an important function in developing countries. They should foster competition law to prevent collusive behavior and to prevent the exploitation of market power. Competition law will also enable countries to counter the anti-competitive ramifications of some WTO agreements.

Conditions of competition and multilateral surveillance
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the effects of a broad-based set of competition policies on the Slovak Republic, with emphasis on the use of industrial structure and import demand measures in determining competition conditions in an economy. Competition policies advocated by the Slovakian government since 1992 were examined. The association between market structure and important penetration factors were also analyzed. Results suggested that a multidimensional competition policy can significantly influence the growth and state of contestable markets.

The European Union's Mediterranean free trade initiative
Article Abstract:
The Euro-Mediterranean Agreement's (EMA) commitment mechanism offers credibility to a gradual reform scheme. Credibility can be improved through the contract's binding nature, links between European Union financial transfers and EMA implementation and its provision for technical assistance to the regulatory functions of Mediterranean countries. However, EMA-based trade liberalization cannot be effective without public sector reform.
