Complementarity and cumulative learning effects in the early diffusion of multiple technologies
Article Abstract:
The economic implications of the complementarity and interrelationships of Flexible Automation (FA) and design engineering technology innovations on 783 metalworking facilities in Italy was examined. The FA category refers to flexible manufacturing systems while the engineering category refers to CAD, CAM, and CAD-CAM systems. The factors examined were the decision processes used in adopting technologies, the effect of technology used by competitors and firm- and industry-specific components in technology adoption. Among the major findings were that usage of FA technologies were associated with larger plant sizes and that complementarity and learning processes were major factors in technology adoption.
