Contracts and control in Japanese distribution
Article Abstract:
The mechanics of a Japanese distribution system, keiretsu, is analyzed. Long-term relationships between firms can result into contractual integration to divide risks and responsibilities in order to remain competitive, as demonstrated by keiretsu. Keiretsu had been credited with the success and cohesiveness of the Japanese market. However, property rights have to be ascertained beforehand in entering quasi-integration to avoid future misunderstanding.
