Demand and pricing of telecommunications services: evidence and welfare implications
Article Abstract:
The recent adoption of extended-area telephone service (EAS) in four areas of Tennessee noticeably enhanced the consumer surplus, although the prevailing level of price-cost margins preceding the implementation of EAS affects the net economic welfare effects. A model of the demand for short long distance calling is presented with EAS demand data from the four areas to measure the structure of inter-exchange demand and quantify the consumer-surplus effects of alternative pricing policies.
