Does Head Start make a difference?
Article Abstract:
The effect of Head Start programs was examined by analyzing data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth and the National Longitudinal Survey's Child-Mother file. The programs are federal grants which are aimed at upgrading the learning and social skills and health status of poor children. It was discovered that education gains among African-American children are rapidly lost compared to white children. All children, white or African-American, however, were able to have increased access to health care services.

Education across generations in South Africa
Article Abstract:
Patterns in South Africa's educational system are examined by developing a model that compares educational attainment between races and between sexes. Time-series data show a significant rise in the the years of schooling of various races, particularly the least-educated blacks, from the 1920s to the 1980s. On the other hand, the educational attainment of women increased faster compared to men for the blacks, whites, and colored categories.

Measurement and mismeasurement of social indicators
Article Abstract:
Problems in measuring and interpreting social indicators usually occur as a result of inefficiencies in data collection. This can be seen in the comparative analysis of household surveys made in Zimbabwe, the 1987 Ivorian Living Standards Survey and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III. The problems can be avoided by providing additional investments geared towards the improvement of survey quality.
