Downtown business development: the example of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin
Article Abstract:
Sheboygan Falls, WI, was one of the five pilot communities for the state of Wisconsin's Main Street Program, an economic development project designed to produce increased levels of reinvestment and jobs and to preserve and enhance the heritage of communities. A brief overview of how the program has fared since its inception in 1988 is presented. Several tips on downtown business development based on the Sheboygan Falls experience are presented.

The role of business retention in downtown revitalization
Article Abstract:
Existing business retention and expansion is a critical component of a downtown revitalization program. There are five basic types of assistance that can be extended to a downtown area's existing businesses. These are improving profitability, providing start-up assistance, facilitating business expansion, providing financial assistance and keeping businesses open when their owners want to sell or retire.

Collaborative economic development organizations in rural Wisconsin
Article Abstract:
Economic development efforts in rural areas are benefitting from the emergence of multi-community or multi-county organizations that bring in the necessary logistic and financial resources to push programs to fruition. In Wisconsin, such organizations have been able to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit and invite new industries into the area. Each multi-community typically comprises 10 communities.
