Regulatory uncertainty and the volatility of regional electricity company share prices: the economic consequences of Professor Littlechild
Article Abstract:
The impact of regulatory intervention on the stock prices of electric power companies in the UK was investigated. An ARCH model was employed to analyze whether the intervention by Electricity Supply Director General Stephen Littlechild in Mar 1995 affected the volatility of stock price returns for 12 selected regional electricity companies between 1990 and 1996. Results showed that the conditional variance of stock returns increased for most companies following Littlechild's intervention.

Earnings, independence or unemployment: why become self-employed?
Article Abstract:
The impact of earnings, independence and unemployment on the choice to become self-employed is analyzed. Individual characteristics were controlled using data from the British Household Panel Study and a simple sample selection model. Results show that higher expected earnings in self-employment compared to paid employment is a major factor in opting for self-employment. Findings also support the theory of a rational self-employment paid employment choice.

Earnings, independence or unemployment: why become self-employed?
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to estimate the effects of certain considerations on individuals becoming self-employed while controlling for certain individual characteristics using the first wave of large new scale British panel data set, the British Household Panel Study and a simple sample model. Findings indicated that the independence self-employment offers is a key attraction, and that self-employment appears to be a response to high labor demand.
