Economics and economists: a European perspective
Article Abstract:
The academic institutions, activities and opinions of economists in Western Europe are compared to those of the US and Canada. Comparative institutional analysis shows that differences in market size contribute to variations in economists' opinions. The academic market in North America is large, uniform and competitive, while Europe consists of regulated and academically closed markets of several countries. The competitive nature of the American market leads economists to specialize in narrow fields, while European economists tend to take a broader approach due to the closed markets there.
