Employment in manufacturing: a long-run relationship and short-run dynamics
Article Abstract:
A model of employment in manufacturing industries in the UK is presented and tested against behavior during the period 1964-1986. During those years, employment in UK manufacturing industries fell, with 1986 numbers coming to under 67% of totals for 1964. The model proposed utilizes cointegration methodology and a vector of variables that includes both relative price effects and output. The model is said to allow differentiation between short term dynamics from long term employment relationships, as implied by the imperfect competition labor market model.

Organizational structure and firm performance: an intertemporal perspective
Article Abstract:
Examination of the costs and benefits of corporate reorganization, most often to multidivisional structures, found most firms that incurred adjustment costs in the short term found the changes in organization beneficial in the long run. A majority of the companies in a sample of large manufacturing firms in the UK found profitability impacted by reorganization, with effects most noticeable in the engineering sector than in other industries represented in the sample. A review of the literature and a model for analysis is presented.

Wage and employment policies in Czechoslovakia

Labor policies in Czechoslovakia have undergone changes in conjunction with that country's attempts to shift to a market economy. Components of the employment policies include establishment of an unemployment insurance system and some sort of wage-setting mechanism involving only limited government involvement. Conditions and policies affecting the labor market are examined, associated problems considered, and alternative possibilities concerning unemployment are presented.
