When parts are manufactured in one country to be assembled in another, both countries benefit. The parts manufacturing often is done in developing countries with inexpensive, plentiful labor and the assembly is done in industrialized nations that benefit from having labor intensive parts manufacture done less expensively.

Coping with terms-of-trade shocks: pegs versus floats

Floating-rate currency policies help developing countries deal with real economic shocks such as low export demands, rising prices and trade barriers. Flexible rates react quickly to these problems by devaluing currency, which reduces prices and increases exports.
