Financing the expansion of the electricity sector: prospects for private sector participation
Article Abstract:
Saudi Arabia faces the problem of closing the gap between a large demand for and a small capability to supply electric power. Expansion of the country's electricity sector to supply the needed amount of energy from 1995 to 2000 would require $2.56 billion. The three viable options for private sector involvement in financing electrification projects are the build-own-operate, build-own-transfer and build-own-operate-transfer schemes. Of the three, the first seems to be most suitable.
