Foreign companies in Iraq: recent measures, possibility of suspending activities
Article Abstract:
Iraq has recently changed laws to accommodate companies that are prohibited from doing business there by the international sanctions. Moreover, the sanctions are interpreted differently from country to country. EC sanctions prohibit exports of all but humanitarian material and any financial transaction that would benefit the government of Iraq. Some EC countries have also instituted additional conditions. Iraq's legal changes permit suspension of activities, offer some protection from fines if accommodation to the Iraqi government is sought but authorize seizure of abandoned assets otherwise.
