When the Eurobond market is good, brokers are more likely to change jobs. In January, ten high ranking people from Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) joined Merrill Lynch, which is expanding internationally. Merrill Lynch's capital base of $1.6 billion and global sales network are attractive to recruits. Some new employees, however, have found Merrill Lynch too large an organization.

January 1984 talks between the Sinhalese and minority Tamils in Sri Lanka have ended inconclusively. Sinhalese were unhappy that the talks were slanted toward Tamil interests. A general election should be called.
